Green

Firstly, don’t stop reading here. Movements for social and environmental responsibility are gaining constant momentum, and in more than just recycling – energy conservation, sustainable development and ethical investment are all relevant and critical issues which students should be aware of.

In terms of green issues, Caius has made lots of progress. We’ve got an environmental committee, have our own environmental policy and have signed the Cambridge Climate Change Charter. There are also facilities for recycling cans, glass, cardboard and plastic in HC and Old Courts, can-recycling in the bar, fair trade purchasing of all tea/coffee and a weekly fair-trade stall for students. We are currently working on installing a system for recycling at bops and are hoping to add recycled stationary to the products on offer at the fair trade stall.

Yellow bags for waste paper which will be picked up by your bedder are in all your rooms, and information on how to recycle everything else is on display in your gyp rooms. If you don't have a yellow bag, then ask your bedder or pick one up outside the deputy housekeeper's office.

Recycling is really easy on the West Road site, so please remember to do it! Every area of accommodation also has a staircase rep, who should make sure all the recycling is getting done and act as a point of contact for any problems you may have. Feel free to email the green officer (Elly - ee244@cam.ac.uk) or recycling officer Peter Atkinson if you are still having problems.

Other than that, there’s really no limit to the differences you can make if you want to get involved in environmental and ethical issues in Caius, and Cambridge. Whether you’re interested in the environmental impact of what we eat at hall or the effect college investment has on human rights worldwide, get thinking, talking and doing and we can start to change things. Look out for discussion groups within Caius, University wide events like one world week, and the numerous debates and discussions held throughout term.
