Overlooking a street.
- Noise
“Not that noisy relative to other rooms in Rose Crescent, as it's on the second floor. Worst nights are Tuesday for La Raza, occasionally drunken people in the street. Double glazing is very good, but with ear plugs there's no noise at all.” (Jan 2008)
“If you're a light sleeper, or suffer from insomnia, this room is not advisable. I thought initially that the main problem would be the Gardies crowds. This can be annoying, but the soundproof windows deal with most of this, and I find the occasional cry of a drunken reveller can be quite soothing at night. In fact, if you're lucky, your window becomes a ringside seat for some exciting brawls... worth staying up for. Anyway, the main thing you have to worry about is La Raza, which is DIRECTLY (albeit 3 floors) below this room. Soundproof windows are no good here; the bass reverberates all the way up the building and can be VERY annoying, especially on a Tuesday night when they have live bands. In the best tradition of Cambridge, though, there is nothing going on at the weekend, so these days are generally much quieter. Apart from on touristy days, when you might be unlucky enough to have a busker outside.” (Jan 2007)
“Lots of noise at the weekends from La Raza downstairs. No traffic noise or noise in the mornings though. Secondary glazing is currently half missing.” (Jan 2005)
- Gyp Room
“One of the bigger gyp rooms in Rose Crescent, lots of cupboard space, 5 people sharing, at the end of a short corridor from this room.” (Jan 2008)
“Gyp room is a moderate size, shared by 5 people. It is just a few metres down the corridor. It has two electric hobs, lots of cupboard and draw space, and a sink (obviously). The fridge is a little small, and at the moment quite smelly. Though this, I should imagine, depends on the dietary habits of your neighbours.” (Jan 2007)
“Good size kitchen (for Caius) shared with 5 people. 2 hobs, large fridge, metal worksurface.” (Jan 2005)
- Bath Room
“2 toilets and 2 showers shared between 5 people on this corridor, all very close to the room. There is a bath on the same floor too.” (Jan 2008)
“The same 5 people (although intruders from down the corridor are regular) share these two bathrooms, each equipped with a very good power shower, a toilet, a sink and a full-length mirror. One frustration is that the shaving mirror is over the toilet, not the sink. Work that logistical puzzle out for yourself; I still haven't managed it. Oh and don't forget to shut the blind before you do anything; the window is just normal glass.” (Jan 2007)
“2 bathrooms between 5. The floor is pretty uneven (as for the rest of the house) so you tend to get puddles round the shower but plenty of hot water etc.” (Jan 2005)
- Furniture
“Desk, chest of drawers, wardrobe, bed, coffee table, bedside table, upright lamp, desk lamp, picture rails, large pin board, 5 decent shelves.” (Jan 2008)
“Medium-sized desk. Bed. Wardrobe. Chest of (4) drawers. Small table (bedside size). One of those long, low tables that can rarely be put to good use. A desk chair. A small, comfy(ish) chair.” (Jan 2007)
“Desk, chest of drawers, 2 small tables, wheely chair, chair, shelving, wardrobe. Position of furniture is limited by the slope of the room . . .” (Jan 2005)
- Best Feature
“Lovely view of a turret of St Mikes, with views onto the Market Square and Trinity Street - you have the reign of Rose Crescent. Very homely.” (Jan 2008)
“Location is obviously great; 30 seconds from most places. It gets good sunlight (though not much oppressive, direct sunlight that reflects of your laptop screen, thankfully). The fact there is an intercom and that the room overlooks the street gives (at least me) a unique feeling of power.” (Jan 2007)
“Good showers nearby.” (Jan 2005)
- Worst Feature
“Sloping floor on one side, fine once you prop things up with cardboard/wood. No sink. Network socket in a slightly awkward place.” (Jan 2008)
“The sloping floor! Rose Crescent is a weird-shaped road; this building is a weird-shaped building, and thus I have a weird-shaped room. This limits the arrangement of furniture (the wardrobe must remain in the corner) and makes drunken negotiation of stuff on the floor even more difficult. The noise. Like i said, if you can't be doing with noise, think again about choosing this room.” (Jan 2007)
“Uneven floors and weekend noise” (Jan 2005)
- General Comments
“Only one small radiator by the window, can get chilly.” (Jan 2008)
“About the size of a standard (not ground floor) Harvey Court room. Maybe slightly larger. Like I said, sunlight is good. Our current bedder is perfect; very discreet and friendly. The carpet is a nice light grey, with a few alcohol splodges. Decor is... nice? Wardrobe space is fine for me. But then I'm a guy; I don't know if it could handle 34 pairs of shoes. The heating is fine; you can control the radiator yourself. Plently of sockets in sensible places. Overall, a very good room.” (Jan 2007)
“Pretty standard. Good sized room. Nice and warm.” (Jan 2005)
