- Noise
“The room is noisy all the time. The college says if you're sensitive to noise you should not choose such a room. You could be totally deaf and still be disturbed by the noise. They'd never put a conference guest in here. However, there is some variety, at least. In the early hours of the morning, it'll be rattling windows and loud cleaning vehicles driving down, followed by some grease deliveries for the kebab shop. Then most of the day will be filled by bustling streets and regular shouts of "BIG ISSUE" - sometimes you might even get a fire alarm. The early afternoon and evening consists mostly of people loudly queueing for kebabs and then later on the club below starts up - your whole room will dance with excitement. Then when the club closes at 2 or 3 or whenever, the drunk chavs queueing for kebabs will ensure that you don't get your sleep until around 4 or 5 - by which time you might as well stay up all night and wait for the rattling windows and a brand new day!” (Mar 2008)
“I think La Raza's speakers are directly below this room. Its noisy enough to actually WAKE ME UP even if im already asleep. Starts about 10:30 and can last until 2am. watch out for tuesdays when a fat balding man sings his "jazz-my-arse" cover versions of N*E*R*D and justin timberlake. its not funny or entertaining, its wank. La Raza should also consider even slightly changing their playlist? its exactly the same weekly. i know this because i can hear the lyrics and the bass and the treble and all of that high pitched stuff too. there is no respite. it is psychologically and educationally damaging, i read some government reports. you'd have thought our caring college would have done something about this by now (especially since they OWN the street). if that was a noisy student below me they'd have been kicked out and fined long ago. they nanny us when it suits them, eh? queues outside gardies are barely worth mentioning compared to the aural torture i have to endure almost every night- they're actually quite a comfort. my best advice is to make sure you come home so drunk that you can't hear anything anyway and later than 2am EVERY night. perhaps Caius will re-imburse me for my efforts in this?” (Feb 2007)
“VERY NOISY! Restaurant/club La Raza is in the basement and it plays loud, live music every night (apart from sundays) until 1am. I tried earplugs but they didn't help because the music comes up through the structure of the building so you can feel it. The noise is not a distraction, it is intrusive. I even got onto Environmental Health noise pollution about it and they did nothing. Then when that finally goes off, you still have all the drunk people outside Gardies queueing (loudly) and enjoying their kebabs (loudly) so you get a LOT of noise from that until gone 2am. I wasn't sleeping and found it so bad that I asked college if I could change rooms (and have been allowed to - if you end up being allocated this room instead of choosing it yourself it's worth asking if you can change!). Also Rose Crescent is obviously busy, so with windows open you get noise from the street, nothing too major, but it is there. Finally, you're next to the stairs, so you do get a fair bit of noise from people tramping up and down the stairs - not really noticable during the day but more of a problem when you're trying to sleep at night.” (Jan 2006)
- Gyp Room
“Gyp room is fine!” (Mar 2008)
“There is a reason i still live here! all of the below are really lovely.” (Feb 2007)
“Pretty big, down the other end of the corridor (not far). 5 sharing. Two electric hot plates (one behind the other - very inconvenient because you can't use them both if you have any large frying pans or a wok on one plate). Fridge sometimes gets a bit full but it's not too bad. Lots of storage space.” (Jan 2006)
- Bath Room
“No shortage of showers and toilets - pretty near to the room! Also no shortage of pubic hair and floaters........but I don't think that's unique to Rose Crescent.” (Mar 2008)
“fine” (Feb 2007)
“Two toilet/shower rooms. Mid-way down the corridor, not far from the room. Good showers.” (Jan 2006)
- Furniture
“You have all the tables you need and more. Ditto for the seats. No complaints here.” (Mar 2008)
“fine” (Feb 2007)
“Adequate. Lots of shelf space. 1 reasonably large desk (I managed to get a computer desk from somewhere but it made everything a little cramped, don't know if it'll stay in the room or not); bed, obviously; wardrobe; large chest of drawers; 2 armchairs (comfy padding with not-so-comfy wooden arms). The room gets wider as you go away from the window so it's a little hard to put things in corners and everything ends up at funny angles.” (Jan 2006)
- Best Feature
“Central location is good and the people from La Raza are pretty decent to you, to be fair.” (Mar 2008)
“location, facilities” (Feb 2007)
“Powerful heating (when it was turned on) so room is nice and cozy. Lots of sockets.” (Jan 2006)
- Worst Feature
“Noise and consequent sleep loss.” (Mar 2008)
“la raza” (Feb 2007)
“NOISE. NOISE. NOISE. NOISE. NOISE.” (Jan 2006)
- General Comments
“The bedder rocks! If you live here with a good group of people, like I do, it's amazing fun and a great community.” (Mar 2008)
“its fine if you don't want to sleep before 2am. occasionally we all want just one early night though, which makes it all the more torturous.” (Feb 2007)
“Friendly bedder, adequate storage space, large kitchen, lots of sockets. I say again: Noisy. Do not choose this room if you want to sleep before 1am. Or even 2am. It's horrible.” (Jan 2006)
