- Noise
“Living on Rose Crescent, this is generally regarded as the biggest problem, though personally I don't see it as a big one. The room is currently missing one panel of double glazing, though is located above a jewelery shop, rather than Gardie's or La Raza, so it isn't one of the bad ones. However everyone gets a bit of it at night. Earplugs should be fine for non-heavy sleepers. Living in the middle of town outweighs this problem.” (Jan 2008)
“Rose Crescent has had a reputation for bad noise. This is partly deserved. In the morning you can hear delivery lorries on Trinity Street, although there is not too much traffic noise in general as the street is pedestrianised. The street is also swept/cleaned from 8 every morning, which can be noisy. During the day there is a constant but pleasant background noise from the street. In the evening, you have to sleep with the window shut. Even still, noise from drunks/students/Gardies does peak between 9-10 and 12-2:30. Depending on how heavily you sleep, how early you go to bed this could be a problem. I sleep fairly heavily, but am still woken on occasion but the screaming/shouting/singing of people outside. The worst noise tends to be Friday/Saturday nights however when La Raza often has live music. This noise and vibrations do travel through the floor and last till about 2. This room is directly above the entrance to La Raza so I suspect may suffer more than others on the corridor. Although all other rooms are double glazed, at the moment the double glazing in this room is broken and has been for some time, increasing the level of noise yet further. The college is stalling on getting this repaired and has given no timeframe for the work to be done.” (Jan 2007)
- Gyp Room
“The gyp room is fine, on the same corridor, shared with 3 or 4 people. Just watch out for the light switch, it's right by the fire alarm stupidly! Would be easy to make that mistake if not careful. Plenty of cupboard space and everything works.” (Jan 2008)
“Long, thin gyp room with plenty of storage and still has its hob conected. No view from Window and a bit of a smell from the extraction fans of McDonalds. Shared with between 4 and 5 others. Only 1 washing machine and tumble dryer between the whole of Rose Crescent, both of which break down occasionaly. That said, St Mikes laundary is only a short walk away.” (Jan 2007)
- Bath Room
“THe bathrooms for this bit of Rose Crescent were refurbished this year, however there are a couple of things wrong with them. The one toilet/shower room door won't lock, and generally we all use one of the 2 showers because the temperature dial on the other seemed dodgy last time I checked. However it's comfortable sized, there's enough facilities to go around (shared with 3 or 4). Room 9 is directly opposite the bathroom which is nice. No sink is not an issue.” (Jan 2008)
“One room with bath, toilet and sink, one with toilet and sink and one new shower room - all directly across the corridor from the room. No noise from the plumbing though. Shared with 4 others. 2 more shower and toilet rooms down the corridor and more on the floor above. All spacious, fairly well appointed and with windows” (Jan 2007)
- Furniture
“Room has one desk, all the drawers open ok. One small chest of drawers, bottom draw really dodgy and annoying. One wardrobe of average size, with fairly big mirror inside (which not all have). One desk chair, one good quality comfy chair, one long '70s style coffee table, one bookshelf, and of course, bed. There's also a couple of shelves in a nice alcove-y bit too.” (Jan 2008)
“Medium sized desk, with 6 drawers and leather top. New desk chair and two comfy chairs, one more so than the other. Large freestanding wardrobe, chest of drawers and both freestanding shelving unit and shelves mounted on wall. long, thin coffee/reading table.” (Jan 2007)
- Best Feature
“The room has a nice layout, and is lucky in that it does not suffer badly from the sounds/smells of the street. It is not the best room in the house but there is nothing unbearable about it. It's a cozy size and quite comfortable to live in for a year no problem.” (Jan 2008)
“Location - has the feel of a central college room, but with no Porters lodge or gate to pass through. Direct access off the pedestrianised street, between a jewllers and Molton Brown. Everybody who visits is really impressed by the location. La Raza, the tapas bar in the basement currently has a deal with the residents of Rose Crescent that lets us get free hot drinks (coffees, teas, hot chocolate etc) and free entry/queue jump, should you wish to visit. The ambience of Rose Crescent can be fairly pleasant, if you like to watch the world go by!” (Jan 2007)
- Worst Feature
“There are a couple of issues which college still need to repair. There is a panel of double glazing missing from the window (which doesn't bother me much but might if you're a light sleeper), and the door buzzer/intercom sometimes makes a 'crackly' sound when a DIFFERENT door on the corridor is buzzed. It's mildly distracting. For ages the door buzzer didn't actually work but I haven't found out if it has been fixed yet. It should be by the time the next occupant has this room anyway. Whilst the room is big enough, it is not the biggest on the corridor.” (Jan 2008)
“Noise, as mentioned above” (Jan 2007)
- General Comments
“Fine for daylight, bedder is perfectly pleasent (though a bit tricky to understand sometimes, we think she's vitually deaf so her speech is affected), there's a picture rail around the room which is good, radiator is fine, there's enough sockets, no smells/stains etc. It's fine really.” (Jan 2008)
“Slightly smaller than most other typical rose crescent rooms but still with high ceiling and picture rail. Recently painted walls. Interesting shaped room, not just a standard square - as the room is on a crescent and also has an area that used to be a fireplace it has some character to it. Heating from one radiator under the window, adjustable and effective. Window basket planted and watered by college!” (Jan 2007)
