About Gonville Court
Rooms in the Old Courts vary greatly in desirability and are usually occupied by third years and a few second years. Access is through the Porter's Lodge (after 2pm every day) which means Guest Rules are strictly enforced, however, this improves the overall security of the Old Courts. The streets can be noisy early in the morning due to delivery lorries, though most of the rooms affected by this have double glazing. Most rooms are singles, however, there are some sets dotted about. Most staircases have a small gyp-room on each floor.
There are two undergraduate staircases in Gonville Court – C and F.
There are not very many C staircase rooms and their size and views over the rooftops of Cambridge make them popular.
F staircase is located up the spiral staircase which can be reached through the door halfway up the stairs to hall and is spread over two floors. The rooms on this staircase vary in size considerably. The whole staircase has been refurbished in recent years – all rooms have carpet, modern built in sink and wardrobe units and some rooms on the upper floor have views of Trinity Great Court. A few Graduate students queue on the lower level to get into the Gallery for Hall, however, the noise (and smell!) from Hall is generally considered minimal. Due to the location of the staircase, queuing for Hall is painless given you are automatically half-way up the queue when you come down from your room!
Please note – if you are considering choosing a room in the centre of town then be sure to find out about noise levels in the room before selecting it. Whilst some rooms have double glazing, others do not and this may influence your choice of room.
